Wrought Iron vs. Aluminum Fence

10/12/2019

For those of us who have ever visited the beautiful southern cities of New Orleans, Charleston or Savannah it’s easy to fall in love with ornate wrought iron fences! You can see charming wrought iron fences all over these cities in all manner of shapes, sizes and styles. If you are thinking about adding a decorative wrought iron fence to your property this article is a must read for you! There is a lot to know and understand about installing and caring for a wrought iron fence that I will detail for you in this article plus I will also give you some alternative aluminum fence ideas to consider.

The Scoop on Wrought Iron Fences
While durable, wrought iron fences do require some routine maintenance to keep it looking beautiful and lasting for many years to come. Rust is a wrought iron fence’s main arch nemesis! If not properly cared for and maintained rust can eat through the iron. To avoid the damaging effects of rust, homeowners should apply a protective wax, sealant or paint every few years.

Since a wrought iron fence can be a costly initial investment, you will want to be sure to inspect your fence on a regular basis can also help avoid major damage by repairing them early on before major damage is caused. While wrought iron provides a very high-end look to any property there are other materials such as aluminum that can also provide a sophisticated look at a lower cost.

Aluminum Fencing
Aluminum fencing is a wonderful alternative fencing material for many homeowners who desire the charm and look of a wrought iron fence without the price tag. The pros of installing an aluminum fence is that the homeowner can spend less money on the initial investment and they also require less maintenance.  The cons of using aluminum fencing are that they don’t typically come in the variety of intricate designs that wrought iron can provide for a truly unique look.

Many aluminum fencing products such as ActiveYards are made with a technology called Corigin which eliminates the need for hardware such as screws and brackets. Instead of using screws and other hardware, Corigin allows the different fecne elements to be connected from the inside of the fence diminishing the likelihood of them become loose and rusted over time. The end result is that fences made with aluminum products like ActiveYard remain strong and study for much longer than other types of fencing.

Another top selling feature of aluminum fencing is that it does not require a sealant or paint to be applied and re-applied every few years. Aluminum fencing also comes in a large variety of colors to match your landscape and home exterior.  As you can tell, aluminum fencing can be a great alternative to wrought iron fencing and many homeowners choose this type of fencing material for many of the same reasons we’ve discussed in this article.
